Are you a mental health counselor struggling with imposter Syndrome? Do you find it hard to believe in your capabilities and fear being exposed as a fraud? It's time to conquer imposter Syndrome and thrive in your career!

Many of us have been there, especially at the beginning of our career or when we decided to do something new. I remember the imposter syndrome when I started as a therapist. Honestly, when things are weird in the universe and many of my clients seem to be struggling at the same time, imposter syndrome comes back for me even now. But I have ways to manage the feelings so as to not get caught up in them and have them drag me down.

Additionally, moving from therapy to coaching brought up imposter syndrome for me. It is very similar, but also very different from therapy and I do not have a coaching credential. I do, however, have a license as a mental health professional. I am more than qualified to be a coach. Yet, because coaching is different in some ways, imposter syndrome still pops up for me.

Imposter syndrome often goes hand in hand with anxiety. The thoughts may be somewhat different, but the physical body sensations are exactly the same, which makes imposter syndrome and anxiety go hand in hand.

As a mental health therapist, you already know may of the tools to use to manage anxiety. You likely teach the tools to your own clients. But sometimes knowledge isn’t enough and we can get caught up in the feelings ourselves.

The racing thoughts and tight muscles can make it hard to stay focused on what the client in front of you needs as your own body believes it is in danger. Staying in the perceived danger and using the tools only works so much because the perceived danger of being called out as a fraud, getting bad reviews, and then not being able to keep your business open nag at you constantly.

The good news is this can and does get better. The more you do this work, the more you believe in yourself and the less the imposter syndrome can take you down.
