Consistency and Staying in the Moment

I have always strived to improve myself. Even as a kid I wanted to do better than the day before — better at running, gymnastics, school, etc. So it’s no wonder I’m on the journey I am now.

I started my career as a therapist. Throughout the years, I honed in my practice until I found my sweet spot — helping first responders and medical professionals, including other therapists, overcome trauma, secondary trauma, and burnout.

Then I opened my coaching practice and went through several niches until I ended up helping small business owners overcome imposter syndrome and anxiety as they build their practice. Therapists aren’t taught how to build a private practice in school. They aren’t taught how to market themselves. They aren’t taught the business aspects of being a therapist.

I continue to work on myself, which in turn helps my practice. I started yoga teacher training and am currently working towards my 200 hour certification. I believe this will be super helpful in my own life, but also in the lives of those I work with as I’ll be able to help them from a new angle as well.

I am super excited about this part of my journey, and I’m also continuing to build my practices. Why am I telling you this? Because if you’re on a journey towards growth, I wanted to share the two things that have helped me over the years: Being consistent and staying present in the moment.

It’s easy to get frustrated and think that you won’t reach your goals when you’re looking at the future. The more you can stay present with the journey instead of focusing on the future, the faster you’ll reach the future. Do you remember being a kid and asking “are we there yet”? The anticipation of waiting for something is very hard. But when the people driving you distract you and you start playing a game like punch buggie or how many different state license plates you find, or singing a song, the time goes more quickly. Staying in the moment helps the time pass faster.

On a similar note to that, every now and then, take a look at how far from your starting point you are. 5 years ago when I moved to Florida, I was in quite a bit of debt (did you know moving is super expensive)?? I made the decision never to go on insurances again and never to work in an agency full time again. This was quite the challenge budgeting. Fast forward 5 years, I am out of that debt and living a great life owning both of these businesses. Every now and then, I looked back to say “where was I and where am I now”. It was very helpful to not get overly frustrated.

Second, consistency. I did a lot of work towards building my practices and didn’t reap the rewards immediately. At this point, my therapy practice is easily gaining new clients and my coaching business is well on its way. Consistency goes hand in hand with staying in the moment.

Each day, you have to do what it takes, no matter what. However, there will be days you skip and instead of getting down on yourself, it is important to stop, notice, and get back on as soon as possible.

I am not super consistent with certain forms of marketing (like blogging, social media, etc). I do great for awhile, then fall away for awhile, then get back on. Someday I might hire someone to help me with this. But that’s beyond the point. It is about getting back up and continuing.

The more consistent you are over a period of time, the more quickly you’ll see the benefits of what you’re doing (unless it isn’t working in which case you’ll see the negative effects).

Yesterday was a rough day for me. Monday is generally the day I like to do my blogs, but yesterday I just couldn’t muster it. No matter what I did, I wasn’t in the headspace to write. I don’t go after perfection, but if I tried yesterday, it would have been crap. I allowed that for myself and today I’m writing. But I also missed the last couple of weeks.

Very important: It…is…ok.

I am on the same journey you are and these two things — consistency and staying in the moment have been a constant thread to getting me to the next level.

I am curious about your thoughts on this topic. Do you find these two things helpful? What else is helpful for you to reach your goals?
